Compare Financial Aid Types

Types of financial aid, explained

Not every line on an award letter means the same thing. Here is how the common types of aid differ, including which ones are grants and which are not.

Gift aid: grants and scholarships

Grants are typically need based and come from federal, state, or institutional sources. Scholarships are often merit or criteria based and come from schools, foundations, and community groups.

Earned aid: work-study

Work-study is a part-time job opportunity. The amount listed is the most you can earn, and it is paid through paychecks during the term.

Borrowed aid: student loans

Federal student loans offer fixed rates and repayment options set by law. Private loans come from lenders and vary by credit and terms. Loans are not grants and always need to be repaid.
